ABC Family Ruined Pretty Little Liars!

While walking through the store one day a book caught my eye. It was yellow and had a picture of a doll on the front of it. I thought it looked interesting. I flipped it over and read the description. I was instantly hooked on the “four pretty girls with an ugly secret“.

The Pretty Little Liars series is about four high school girls whose friendship was ripped apart by the disappearance of their best friend Alison when the were in middle school. Years later, they are brought together when someone who goes by "A" suddenly starts sending them all secret messages threatening to expose secrets only Alison knew.

Being the huge fan I am, I was extremely excited to hear there was going to be a TV show made from the books. My excitement soon faded away after the premier of the first episode. After cramming the entire first book into a one hour episode, the storyline just got worse. The show didn't stick to the books at all. The basic storyline of four high school  girls trying to find out what happened to their friend while also trying to find out who was stalking them, was the same. Everything else was completely screwed up. Important characters that were in the book didn't even have a part in the show. The show also added characters that completely changed the out outcomes of some major situations.

In the first three books the girls hated each other because of secretsfrom their past. Once all of their secrets came out most of their problems were resolved. This brought them closer but they still weren't exactly friends. From the baginning, the show portrayed them as always being friends. The secrets tearing them apart, eventually brought them together. This was such a major part of the book, but had no real significance in the show. It also portrays the girls as manipulative sluts who will do anything to get what they want. In the book the girls were liars and kept secrets from everyone but they weren't as bad as the show made them out to be.

The show is a trashier, less entertaining version of the books and it should have never been made. Well it should have never been given the name "The Pretty Little Liars" at least. The show was definitely entertaining. However, having read the books and knowing the storyline the show makes no sense to me. I've always heard when a book is made into a TV show or movie, don't expect to see exactly what you read. I thought I was going to atleast see something at least similar to what I read. I didnt, and that ruined it for me.http://harperteen.com/feature/pretty-little-liars/
